avathArikai (Introduction)

piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully quotes nanjIyar’s words to establish the trustworthiness of this principle [of bhagavAn being the exclusive means].

sUthram 69

“anthima kAlaththukkuth thanjam ‘ippOdhu thanjam en engiRa ninaivu kulaigai’ ” enRu jIyar aruLichcheyvar.

Simple Explanation

nanjIyar would mercifully explain “The refuge for the final moment is ‘to give up the thought of what is the refuge now?’ ”

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

anthima kAlaththukku …

That is – Once nanjIyar went to enquire the well-being of a SrIvaishNava who was one his disciples. At that time that SrIvaishNavar asked “Please bless me a wise advice which will be a refuge for me in my final moments”. nanjIyar mercifully advised him – the refuge for the final moments is to abandon the thought of protecting the self by thinking what is the refuge now. Thus, the thoughts of ISvaran to uplift the AthmA will fructify if the AthmA’s thought to protect the self changes (i.e. when he abandon it).
