avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “What happens when kainkaryam is not done even due to fear?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains.

sUthram 282

adhuvum illAdhapOdhu, adhikAraththilum, upAya upEyangaLilum anvayam inRikkE ozhiyum.

Simple Explanation

When such kainkaryam is not done, one will not have any engagement in one’s qualification [of being a servitor] and in the means and the goal.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

adhuvum illAdhapOdhu …

That is – when even the secondary kainkaryam which is done due to fear is not done, due to lack of kinchithkAram (small services), one will not have engagement in

  • the qualification in the form of being a servitor
  • bhagavAn’s krupai (mercy) being the means which expects a qualified prapanna
  • bhagavAn’s happiness (joy in his divine face) being the goal which expects prapanna’s favourable actions
