avathArikai (Introduction)

piLLai lOkAchAryar is elaborating this [what was explained in previous sUthram].

sUthram 284

adhAvadhu – thAn kaiyElAdhE avanaik kaiyERkap paNNugai.

Simple Explanation

That is – instead of self praying to bhagavAn for something in return, making him ask for more.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

adhAvadhu …

adhAvadhu

Having kainkaryam as the end goal instead of having it as means.

thAn kaiyElAdhE avanaik kaiyERkap paNNugaiyAvadhu

One who performs kainkaryam, instead of praying for something from bhagavAn in return for that kainkaryam, doing it for the sake of it, and making bhagavAn who accepts such kainkaryam to eagerly accept that with expectation and without considering his completeness as said in mahAbhAratham “… thAssarvAS SirasA dhEva: prathigruhNAthivai svayam” (emperumAn himself accepts on his head, all the kainkaryams which were well done by great devotees).
