ivaRRukkuk kAraNam iraNdil onRinil onRugaigaL.
Simple Explanation
The reason for these [knowledge and ignorance] is being immersed in one of the two aspects.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
That is – the reason for ignorance in artha panchakam is the abundance of rajas (passion) and thamas (ignorance) qualities, as said in thiruchchandha viruththam 68 “muththiRaththu vANiyaththu iraNdil onRu” (involvement with rajas and thamas qualities among the three qualities of sathva, rajas and thamas); the reason for knowledge in artha panchakam is the abundance of sathva (goodness) qualities as said in thiruvezhukURRirukkai “mukkuNaththu iraNdavai agaRRi onRinil onRi ninRu” (stay focused on having sathva guNam (tranquillity), and avoid two other guNams (rajas and thamas)). While rajas and thamas lead to anyathA gyAnam (understanding an entity to be something else) and viparItha gyAnam (understanding an entity’s quality wrongly), sathvam leads to true yathA gyAnam (true knowledge).
