avathArikai (Introduction)

Thus, piLLai lOkAchAryar showed authentic proofs for the presence of three types of personalities who perform prapaththi; he also stated that among the three types of prapaththi, prapaththi done due to bhakthi pAravaSyam is the most important. When asked “Why do personalities who perform prapaththi due to such bhakthi pAravaSyam have their surrender destroyed to engage in self-effort to attain bhagavAn and face-off with him when he comes?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully responds here.

sUthram 51

bhakthi thannilE avasthAbEdham piRandhavARE idhudhAn kulaiyak kadavadhAy irukkum.

Simple Explanation

As their bhakthi transforms into a different [higher] state, this [commitment in their surrender] will be destroyed.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

bhakthi thannil …

bhakthi thannilE avasthAbEdham piRandhavARE

bhakthi pAravaSyam means firmly believing bhagavAn as the upAyam, due to not having the ability for self-effort because of weakened senses, and waiting for his arrival; instead of remaining in this state, progressing to a state of great urge/sorrow where one rolls his eyes [in desperation], and tries to attain emperumAn immediately through any means.

idhu

prapaththi – the faith in one’s surrender.

kulaiyak kadavadhAy irukkum

When one reaches such state, prapaththi becomes destroyed. [That is] Giving up the state of remaining fully dependent on emperumAn, without any engagement in self effort as said in thiruvAimozhi 5.8.3 “ennAn seygEn“.
