avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “How are these principles seen in these personalities?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains.

sUthram 145

SrI bharathAzhwAnukku, nanmaidhAnE thImaiyAyththu; SrI guhapperumALukku thImaidhAnE nanmaiyAyththu.

Simple Explanation

For SrI bharathAzhwAn, good qualities became harmful; for SrI guhapperumAL, bad qualities became favourable.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

SrI bharathAzhwAnukku …

That is – for SrI bharathAzhwAn who desired to bring back SrI rAma and perform the coronation ceremony for him, thereby live serving him matching the true nature of the self, as said in SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 101.12 “EpiScha sachivaissArdham …” (with these ministers who are here … I pray unto you) – throughout the journey, he thought about bringing SrI rAma to SrI ayOdhyA, and surrendered at the divine feet of SrI rAma with great sorrow, that good activity of surrender itself has become harmful since it was not in line with the divine heart of SrI rAma.

For SrI guhapperumAL who is filled with bad qualities as said in periya thirumozhi 5.8.1 “Ezhai Edhalan …” (Desirous of worldly pleasures, inimical) and who was accepted by SrI rAmA who came to him voluntarily, since SrI rAma accepted him considering his defects as his offering, the bad qualities which are sinful, have become favourable.

puNya (virtue) and pApa (vice) are defined as in athimAnusha sthavam “yathvath priyam thadhiha puNyam apuNyam anyath” (What is dear to emperumAn is puNya and rest are all pApa); hence the previously mentioned two principles are seen in these two personalities.
