avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “In that case, is pArathanthryam good?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully responds.

sUthram 163

puNyampOlE pArathanthryamum parAnubhavaththukku vilakku.

Simple Explanation

Just like puNyam (SEshathvam – servitude), total dependence is also to be shunned for the sake of bhagavAn’s enjoyment.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

puNyampOlE …

puNyam

SEshathvam was identified as a virtue previously [in sUthram 160]; as explained previously, due to considering oneself lowly, it will be a reason to move away from bhagavAn and hence will be a hurdle for bhagavAn’s enjoyment; similarly, during the enjoyment, instead of responding to him favourably, due to exclusive pArathanthryam, if one remains without any reaction like achith (matter), that will also be a hurdle for ISvaran who expects positive interaction for his enjoyment.

Alternative explanation.

puNyam

sath karmam – virtuous deeds. Though this is different from pApam (vicious deeds), this will also be a hurdle for attaining bhagavAn [since both pApa and puNya keep a person in this world]. Similarly, even more than SEshathvam which leads to moving away from bhagavAn, pArathanthryam which does not let the chEthana respond positively towards bhagavAn, due to remaining without any reaction like achith, is also considered as a hurdle for bhagavAn’s enjoyment.

With this, it is said that exclusive SEshathvam and exclusive pArathanthryam will remain hurdles for bhagavAn’s enjoyment in their own ways; it is said that SEshathvam along with pArathanthryam is desirable [remaining according to the lord’s desire with total dependence].
